چکیده

We study the stochastic machine replenishment problem, which is a canonical special case of closed multiclass queuing systems in Markov decision theory. The problem models the scheduling of processor repairs in a multiprocessor system in which one repair can be made at a time and the goal is to maximize system utilization. We analyze the performance of a natural greedy index policy for this problem. We first show that this policy is a 2 approximation by exploring linear queuing structure in the index policy. We then try to exploit more complex queuing structures, but this necessitates solving an infinite-size, non-linear, non-convex, and non-separable function-maximization program. We develop a general technique to solve such programs to arbitrary degree of accuracy, which involves solving a discretized program on the computer and rigorously bounding the error. This proves that the index policy is in fact a 1.51 approximation. The main non-trivial ingredients of the proof are two folds: finding a way to analyze the complex queuing structure of the index policy, and bounding the error in discretization when numerically solving the nonlinear function-maximization. We believe that this framework is general enough to be useful in the analysis of index policies in related problems. As far as we are aware, this is one of the first non-trivial approximation analysis of an index policy a multi-class queuing problem, as well as one of the first non-trivial example of an approximation ratio that is rigorously proven by numerical optimization via a computer.

Vendor Managed Inventory of a Single-vendor Multiple-retailer Single-warehouse Supply Chain under Stochastic Demands

In this study, a vendor-managed inventory model is developed for a single-vendor multiple-retailer single-warehouse (SV-MR-SV) supply chain problem based on the economic order quantity in which demands are stochastic and follow a uniform probability distribution. In order to reduce holding costs and to help balanced on-hand inventory cost between the vendor and the retailers, it is assumed that...

Joint pricing, inventory, and preservation decisions for deteriorating items with stochastic demand and promotional efforts

This study models a joint pricing, inventory, and preservation decision-making problem for deteriorating items subject to stochastic demand and promotional effort. The generalized price-dependent stochastic demand, time proportional deterioration, and partial backlogging rates are used to model the inventory system. The objective is to find the optimal pricing, replenishment, and preservation t...

Two-stage fuzzy-stochastic programming for parallel machine scheduling problem with machine deterioration and operator learning effect

This paper deals with the determination of machine numbers and production schedules in manufacturing environments. In this line, a two-stage fuzzy stochastic programming model is discussed with fuzzy processing times where both deterioration and learning effects are evaluated simultaneously. The first stage focuses on the type and number of machines in order to minimize the total costs associat...

Stochastic Decision Making in Manufacturing Environments

Decision making plays an important role in economics, psychology, philosophy, mathematics, statistics and many other fields. In each field, decision making consists of identifying the values, uncertainties and other issues that define the decision. In any field, the nature of the decisions is affected by environmental characteristics. In this paper, we are considered the production planning pro...

A stochastic model for the cell formation problem considering machine reliability

This paper presents a new mathematical model to solve cell formation problem in cellular manufacturing systems, where inter-arrival time, processing time, and machine breakdown time are probabilistic. The objective function maximizes the number of operations of each part with more arrival rate within one cell. Because a queue behind each machine; queuing theory is used to formulate the model. A Multi-Stage Single-Machine Replacement Strategy Using Stochastic Dynamic Programming

In this paper, the single machine replacement problem is being modeled into the frameworks of stochastic dynamic programming and control threshold policy, where some properties of the optimal values of the control thresholds are derived. Using these properties and by minimizing a cost function, the optimal values of two control thresholds for the time between productions of two successive nonco...
